IMPROVISING THROUGH LIFE
Improvisation is the spontaneous interplay of ideas and creative expression; in short, creating on the spot. To be so in the moment, one has to be confident enough to let go and take risks. The life and the art of an artist is really one and the same, so learning to be more improvisational in one's art also means taking more chances in one's life.
For a jazz musician, improvising requires a great deal of technique and knowledge as well as an adventurous sense of self. With the right educational background a musician has a basis of confidence from which to take off from; knowledge provides the appropriate security that is needed to take the necessary creative risks. As it is in art so it is in life, we can all learn to let go and live a much more creative existence if we are grounded emotionally.
There is a tremendous feeling of freedom and joy that one can experience when in the throws of a spontaneous moment. Whether creating a musical expression or simply taking a real risk in life, a truly joyful experience is never based in fear or judgment. To trust yourself to make the right creative or personal choice requires the ability to really let go. However much we may all want to taste such freedom it is not easy. Mastering control over our art and our lives necessitates a strong vigilance toward conquering the demons of fear and facing the truths in our lives. With such commitment comes emotional growth and artistic and personal freedom.
Life is all about being in the moment; what we see and feel right now is all we can truly know. Developing a trust and respect of our inner selves is an essential step on the path to free expression. This is really all about love, for self love will beget universal love and joy. When you are open to such feelings, the fears of success and failure do not overshadow your efforts.
Experience the ultimate "sweet surrender"--embrace your fears and let go to life.
