THE GIFT OF SPIRIT
The key source of life and power, our energy is regarded as the "spirit" within us. Spirit is everything that we are, it is really all there is. When our spirit is free, we feel alive--capable of anything; creativity is at a high point and self-expression soars. However when this energy is blocked our life force is deadened, and we cease to create, becoming stagnant and unfulfilled.
The "gift of spirit" requires vigilance--it must not be taken for granted. Our artistic abilities can not develop if we do not tend to our spiritual selves; this requires a daily commitment to the nourishment of our souls. When artists feel stuck in their work they are often spiritually starved, for there is no freedom of expression without freedom of self. If we are not growing emotionally, we are not growing artistically. The path to self discovery and self love leads the way to an awareness of one's truth; real artistic expression comes from the ownership of one's true self. Coming to terms with the demons in our lives and facing the fears that blind us, takes a great deal of courage, however finding that courage brings us closer to our humanity and therefore closer to our "godliness". When we trust the universe we feel a sense of safety that supports risk taking and growth, allowing us to shed what is familiar and to carve out new creative directions.
When one is spiritually aware, there is more of a sense of order and balance in life that creates a foundation for discipline. All things are possible through discipline; the more control you have over your life the more confidence you will have to take creative chances in your work. Setting goals and developing a reverence for process will produce attainment. What really matters in an artistic life is sustenance and endurance which can only come from self discipline and process.
Change is a constant, and with change comes growth, both emotional and artistic. When we resist change because of our fears, we stifle growth. Emotional work is a very important part of everyone's life, but it is hard work. It takes courage to grow and to face ourselves honestly but when we surrender to the truth we can break from the patterns of the past.
It is often said that "the truth will set you free," and indeed it does.
